I was having lunch with a coworker yesterday that has a 4 year old girl at home. He was telling how proficent on the computer she has become. He said that she spends hours and hours on the Sesame Street website. I didn't know that Sesame Street even had a web site, especially one for kids. But I think it is a great idea.
Unlike the TV show, computers are interactive. The child can respond to the characters, make decisions, make mistakes, and learn from them. They get rewarded for learning, exploring, and trying things again and again until they learn it and move on to more exciting things. He told me that his daughter can already read, and type.
He said that he also lets her visit the Disney for Kids web site. He trusts them and Sesame Street to not introduce virusus on his home computer, or link the kid to places where he doesn't want them to go. He has installed a firewall on his computer that only allows his daughter to go to this two web sites.
I think this is a brilliant use of tax dollars! God knows the government wastes much more on worthless pork projects than they throw at Children's Television Workshop (the producers of Sesame Street).
